The plan was developed under the Kenya Health Policy Framework, the Economic Recovery Strategy and the health related targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Government has over the past four years increased the budget of the ministry from Kshs 18.3 billion in 2002/03 to Kshs 33.3 billion in 2006/07. This amount has been spent on different programmes resulting in enhanced delivery of health care services at all levels, with notable achievements. Some of these include:
The Provision of malaria and TB treatment in countrywide public health facilities Provision of free ARVs to HIV/Aids patients Free medical attention for children under five years of age The Distribution of 6 million treated mosquito nets free to wananchi The construction of 1,000 new dispensaries and health clinics Re-organization of hospital management teams Availability of medicines in all public health centers across the country The disbursement of Ksh.180, 000 Kshs. 24,000 to all health centers and dispensaries for rehabilitation These investments in health care has worked with waiting times now shorter than ever and more lives being saved with reductions in deaths from previously curable illnesses .
