Government MUST contain the Mungiki menace and other violent groups and the police should exercise caution so that their campaign against organised crime is not considered extra-judicial executions.

Mungiki is instilling fear and terror on Kenyans and has created a national security issue that the government has FAILED to address. Unfortunately, the issue cannot be addressed unless the government acknowledges the gravity of the situation.

The cult has been linked to unti-government movements but there are no definitive answers as to where the sect draws its support from. Specifics of their origin and doctrines are unclear and thus all efforts by local law enforcement to curb the cult have been fruitless. Therefore, the Kenyan community needs to have a passionate discussion about the methods of recruitment, indoctrination, persuasion and retention of members of this destructive cult. Otherwise, all efforts to fight the sect will be in vain.

Nevertheless, for the Kenyan government to sit on the sidelines as this group perpetrates these heinous acts on Kenyans is simply UNACCEPTABLE. The government's position time and time again has been - "Mungiki is a banned sect and we shall deal with it and crush it". Kenyans are not as gullible as the government portrays them to be.

Besides mungiki, other extremist groups include the Taliban in Mathare, Kamjeshi vigilante group and most recently, the Sabaot Land Defense Force (SLDF) based in Mt Elgon. These illegal gangs are increasingly becoming sophisticated in the use of deadly weapons and tactics. They are well-coordinated and appear to operate with pure impunity despite claims by the government to the contrary.

It’s simply alarming when the government of the day denies that an extremist group causing a serious national security issue exists in a sovereign nation. The government has an obligation to provide security to every Kenyan from local or foreign threats. Unfortunately, the government has failed in this task and appears unwilling or unable to wrestle with these gangs. I wonder why?????

NO human being should be subjected to this kind of torture - worse still - slaughtered like a goat and dismembered and have their limbs fed to dogs.
